About JR Hardscaping

Where engineering precision meets architectural artistry—transforming outdoor spaces across the Greater Toronto Area for over two decades.

JR Hardscaping Premium Project

Who We Are

JR Hardscaping is not a typical landscaping contractor. We are precision-engineered outdoor construction specialists serving discerning homeowners across Toronto, Vaughan, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, Markham, and the broader GTA. With over 20 years of experience and partnerships with premium stone suppliers including Techo-Bloc and industry-leading fabricators, we deliver hardscaping that combines structural integrity with timeless aesthetics.

What sets us apart is our engineering-first approach. While others focus on surface aesthetics, we build from the ground up—literally. Every project begins with proper excavation, geotechnical analysis, and drainage engineering. We source premium materials directly from trusted suppliers, ensuring consistency and quality. Our certified masonry teams follow rigorous installation protocols that have been refined over hundreds of projects. The result? Hardscaping that performs flawlessly for decades, not just years.

Our Philosophy

A driveway, retaining wall, or patio should last many years without maintenance. To achieve this, we apply civil engineering principles to residential construction: proper excavation depth, aggregate compaction testing, drainage system integration, and material selection based on load requirements and freeze-thaw resistance. We don't build "landscapes"—we build residential roads, structural earth retention systems, and architectural masonry that happen to be beautiful.

What We Do

We specialize in three core disciplines, each executed with the same level of technical rigor:

1. Hardscape Construction & Engineering

We construct load-bearing outdoor infrastructure designed to withstand Canadian freeze-thaw cycles, heavy vehicle traffic, and decades of seasonal stress.

  • Interlocking Driveways: High-Performance Bedding systems, permeable paving, 80mm vehicular-rated pavers
  • Structural Retaining Walls: Geogrid-reinforced Armor Stone and architectural block systems
  • Pool Surrounds & Coping: Thermal-resistant, anti-slip decking with custom-fabricated edge profiles
  • Patios & Walkways: Large-format sintered stone, natural flagstone, and wet-lay masonry applications

2. Outdoor Living & Lifestyle Infrastructure

We design and build year-round outdoor living systems that extend your home's functionality into the landscape.

  • Outdoor Kitchens: Masonry islands with licensed gas/water/electrical infrastructure and sintered stone countertops
  • Fire Features: Refractory-core fire pits and fireplaces (gas and wood-burning)
  • Heated Snow-Melt Systems: Hydronic and electric driveway heating with smart sensors
  • Integrated Lighting: Low-voltage LED systems with core-drilled step lights and wall washes

3. Site Management & Technical Services

We manage the complexities that other contractors avoid—permits, drainage, grading, and multi-trade coordination.

  • Drainage Engineering: Laser-guided grading, French drains, channel drains, permeable systems
  • Permit Management: Municipal applications, conservation authority approvals, lot coverage calculations
  • Utility Coordination: Ontario One Call locates, gas line routing, electrical rough-ins
  • Excavation & Logistics: Micro-excavators for narrow lots, ground protection mats, soil disposal

How We Do It: The JR Quality

Quality is not an accident—it is the result of a disciplined, repeatable process. Every JR Hardscaping project follows the same 10-stage methodology, refined over 20+ years and hundreds of installations.

1

Initial Consultation & Site Assessment

We begin with an on-site visit to understand your vision, assess site constraints (slope, drainage, access), and identify potential challenges (buried utilities, soil type, municipal restrictions). This is a listening session—we ask questions about how you use your space, your budget priorities, and your timeline expectations.

2

Design Development & Material Selection

Based on your input, we develop a preliminary design with scaled drawings and 3D renderings (for complex projects). We visit our LuxeStone showroom together to select actual stone samples—you see the color, texture, and finish in person, not on a computer screen. We discuss the trade-offs: cost vs. longevity, aesthetics vs. maintenance, trendy vs. timeless.

3

Engineering & Permit Acquisition

For projects involving retaining walls over 4 feet, drainage alterations, or municipal right-of-way work, we prepare engineering drawings and submit permit applications on your behalf. We handle Ontario One Call utility locates and coordinate with conservation authorities if your property is near a watercourse or protected area. This phase ensures legal compliance and prevents costly mid-project surprises.

4

Pre-Construction Site Preparation

Before excavation begins, we install ground protection (AlturnaMatstm) to prevent damage to your lawn and driveway. We flag all sprinkler heads and irrigation lines. We place roll-off bins on protective planks to avoid gouging your existing driveway. We establish a staging area for materials and a portable washroom for our crew (so they never need to enter your home). We notify your neighbors of the project timeline and our contact information.

5

Excavation & Subgrade Engineering

This is where quality is won or lost. We excavate to the engineered depth (typically 12-18 inches for driveways, deeper for retaining walls). We remove all organic topsoil and unstable clay. We install Geotextile Fabric at the bottom of the excavation to prevent subgrade contamination. We compact the native soil to 95% Standard Proctor Density using a plate compactor or jumping jack. This creates a stable platform that will not settle over time.

6

Drainage Infrastructure Installation

Before any stone is laid, we install the invisible systems that prevent future problems. We trench and lay perforated weeping tiles at the perimeter of patios and behind retaining walls. We install channel drains where necessary. We route downspout extensions underground to discharge points. We use laser levels to establish positive grading (minimum 1% slope away from the house). Water management is non-negotiable—it is the foundation of longevity.

7

Base Construction & Compaction

We install the structural aggregate base in lifts (layers)—typically 6 inches of Granular 'A' or 'B', followed by 1 inch of bedding sand or High-Performance Bedding (HPB). Each lift is compacted to 98% density using a vibrating plate compactor. We do not dump 12 inches of gravel and hope for the best—proper compaction requires layered installation. This base is what prevents "tire ruts" and sinking. It is the structural backbone of the entire project.

8

Stone Installation & Pattern Execution

Now the artistry begins. Our masons lay the pavers or flagstone according to the approved pattern. We use string lines and laser levels to ensure perfect alignment and consistent joint spacing. For large-format slabs, we use lippage-control clips to prevent tripping hazards. We constantly check for levelness—a patio that "puddles" water will fail prematurely. Edge restraints (concrete soldier courses or Permaledge) are installed to lock the perimeter stones in place. Every cut is precise; every joint is intentional.

9

Joint Stabilization & Final Compaction

Once all stones are in place, we sweep High-Performance Polymeric Sand (HP NextGel, Gator Dust, or equivalent) into the joints. This is not regular sand—it contains polymers that, when activated with water, create a flexible, weed-resistant bond. We compact the entire surface one final time using a plate compactor with a protective pad (to avoid scratching the stone). We mist-activate the polymeric sand and allow it to cure. This step is what prevents weeds, ants, and joint erosion for years to come.

10

Final Inspection, Cleanup & Warranty Documentation

We conduct a final walkthrough with you to ensure every detail meets your expectations. We clean the site meticulously—power-washing excess polymeric sand, removing all debris, and restoring disturbed lawn areas. We provide you with a Warranty Package that includes material warranties (from our LuxeStone/CornerStone suppliers) and our workmanship guarantee. We also provide maintenance guidelines: when to seal (if applicable), how to clean stains, and how to winterize outdoor kitchens or water features.

You receive our direct contact information for any future questions. We are not a "fly-by-night" contractor—we will be here in 5, 10, and 20 years if you need us.
